Common questions

How many optometrists are there in Hamilton?

This guide lists 14 optometry practice locations across Hamilton: five in the central city, four at Chartwell, two in Rototuna and Flagstaff, two at Te Rapa and The Base, and one in Frankton. Several are branches of national chains (Specsavers, OPSM, Bailey Nelson); the rest are independent or part of regional groups (Paterson Burn, Matthews Eyecare, Rose, Rototuna).

Who is the best optometrist in Hamilton?

There is no single best optometrist — it depends on what you need. For a routine eye test and glasses, any practice on this page can help and the choice usually comes down to location, hours and price. If you have a child with worsening short-sightedness, keratoconus, dry eye that is not settling, or need a specialty contact lens fit, choose a practice that lists that service and ask how often they manage it. Our guide to choosing an optometrist sets out the questions worth asking.

How much does an eye test cost in Hamilton?

Fees vary by practice and by what is included. Of the practices that publish fees online, Rose Optometry charges $129 for a comprehensive adult examination (45 minutes, imaging included) and $79 for children and school students, and Flagstaff Eye Care charges $95 for a 40-minute examination including an OCT scan. Chains generally advertise their own offers. Children aged 15 and under with a Community Services Card or High Use Health Card can claim the Enable New Zealand spectacle subsidy ($287.50 a year). See the full cost and subsidy guide.

Can I get a free eye test in Hamilton?

Four-year-olds get a free vision screen through the B4 School Check, and Year 7 students are screened at school for short-sightedness. Eligible children's eye examinations are covered by the Enable New Zealand subsidy, Work and Income can advance up to $280 for an eye test and glasses if you are on a low income (it is repaid), and ACC contributes to the cost of injury-related eye care. Rose Optometry also offers free 15-minute chats about myopia control and ortho-k, which are not eye examinations. Details and eligibility.

Do I need a referral to see an optometrist?

No. In New Zealand you can book directly with any optometrist. Optometrists examine eyes, prescribe glasses and contact lenses, and most New Zealand optometrists now hold a therapeutic (prescribing) endorsement to treat conditions such as infections and inflammation — ask the practice. They refer you to an ophthalmologist (eye surgeon) when surgery or specialist treatment is needed. Optometrist, ophthalmologist or optician?

What should I do about a sudden eye problem?

Sudden loss of vision, a curtain across your vision, new flashes with a shower of floaters, a chemical splash or a penetrating injury need urgent hospital care — call 111 or go to Waikato Hospital's emergency department. For a painful red eye, a foreign body, or a sudden change in vision that is not an emergency, phone an optometrist the same day; several Hamilton practices keep acute appointments.
